Essential Tools For Any Kitchen Remodeling Project

By Jhon R.

Before you start any major project, it's important to have all the proper tools and materials that you will need. Along with having the right tools, you also need to understand their purpose and the basics of how to use them safely. In this article, we'll cover some standard tools you will need for most kitchen remodeling projects along with a few critical safety tips.

Tile-Cutter/Tile Saw

A tile cutter or tile saw is basically a tool that allows you to safely cut tiling. Whether you are putting in a new backsplash or redoing the floors, this is an invaluable tool that will be essential to your project.

A tile saw uses a water-cooled diamond blade to make extremely precise cuts through thick tiles. Be careful when using this power tool and always wear safety glasses to protect your eyes against flying pieces of tile.

Jigsaw

A jigsaw is an extremely versatile hand-saw that's great for jobs like cutting out sink holes on laminate counter tops. Most home renovators opt for the flexibility and mobility that a cordless version offers, but you can save money and get more power with corded options. Look for a jigsaw with a variable speed option that will allow you to adjust the speed of the blade depending on your project.

Safety Gear

No job site is complete without safety gear. You should always have full eye protection, ear covers for noisy environments, ventilation masks, a hard hat to protect your head, work boots, gloves for both sharp and hazardous materials and a first aid kit. Many people take safety for granted when doing home renovations, feeling a false sense of security since the work is at home and not a large construction site. That, though, is where the danger lies. So it is not enough to simply have safety gear on hand - it is also critical to use them!

Router

A router is one of the most versatile tools you'll ever use and it comes in handy when you're working with cabinetry or countertops. A router is simply a cutting device attached to a vertical motor. It lets you work with complex joinery like dowel joints or dovetails; it can shave off that extra ¾ of an inch of countertop and it is strong enough to cut plastic, laminate, MDF and lots more.

Wrench Set

A good wrench set is going to get you through most of your plumbing needs. Look for one that feels comfortable in your hands but still gives you a feeling of weight and power.

Finally, you're going to need a lot more tools to complete a kitchen remodeling project - band saws, drills and sanders could all be needed along with hand items like putty knives, trowels and a tape measure. But, these are the basics. To save money, you can rent most power tools from your local hardware store. With programs that allow you to rent tools by the hour or the month, this can be a great option for home renovators looking to save some money.
