I use the Stanley model 30-925. Try to get the yahaa orange plastic case, so you can see it when jumbled in with other stuff. My first one of these worked well. When the tape broke I bought a 30' version. Seemed like more was better -- wrong!. Stanley winds too much tape in the same case -- it drags, and often won't retract without pushing the tape by hand. I gave it to a guy I was riled at (He thought it was a peace offering, and I though I was getting even, so it worked well two ways), and bought another 25 footer, but it drags a little on retraction too, and they didn't have the orange so I had to get iridescent green. It works OK, but I'm not touting Stanley tapes. You may want to try another brand.

Probably the second tape you want to buy is a 100 footer. You probably won't use it often, but when you need it, you need it. Mine's a Stanley model 34-500. It's nothing special, but it gets the job done.

I use a pair of calipers almost as much as my 25' steel tape. They're very convenient for measuring smaller (less that 5 inches) objects quite accurately. Mine's low-midrange quality. I was given mine 40 years ago, or I probably wouldn't have bought it and never realized how useful they are. Cheap ones ($5-$15) will do routine jobs adequately. Good ones are expensive ($50-$200). I now have an expensive pair, but I rarely use it. It's less convenient to read. Instead of giving the size in inches and fractions of an inch (e.g., 3 5/8") it gives the answer in decimal inches. Who remembers that .4375 is 7/16" inch?

Now For the Real Reason I'm Writing This Article

I chose the title of the article because I only do homespun fix-up projects, and don't know if these next gadgets would be efficient for people who do this stuff constantly, but now that I've discovered them, I won't do a job without them. They're quilting rulers. My wife is an obsessive quilter (an illness), and when she saw me trying to measure an outline on the side of a 2x6 she said, "Move over, let me show you how to do that;" and plopped one of these on the board and had it done perfectly in no time. I haven't been without this hand-me-down since. She won't let me use her rulers because I scratch them up. (By the way, NEVER EVER use a quilter's scissors!! Rumor is, that's the real reason Ms Bobbit bobbed it.)

I consider the 6x12 incher the most versatile size. I suggest you get it first and see if you find it as useful as I do. The 6x24 is the next most useful, on occasion the 12x12 is good to use to see if something's square, but these two are large and hard to store. They do have holes in them, and I hang the big ones on screws on the inside of a cabinet door.

My wife organizes her collection this way:

I have trouble finding the right words to explain why they're so great. You almost have to use one for a while to learn all the ways it helps. One big thing, they're clear, so you can align them with any edge or mark or line beneath it. For example, if you want to mark a line at 3 and 5/8" from the edge of a board, looking through the ruler, align the edge of the board with the 3 5/8 line then mark along the end. It's perfectly square so you can align one edge with the edge of anything. The yellow lines are easy to see. You can use the edge as a straight edge to run a pencil along for a straight line. If you're very careful you can run a utility knife down the edge to cut things like cardboard. I do this sometimes, but I don't recommend it. If the knife cuts into the edge of the plastic you'll have to buy a new one (or have an unsmooth, unstraight edge, which destroys much of its usefulness).Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-241700029299155383.post-57501292402330706312008-10-30T11:32:00.000-07:002008-10-30T11:34:26.219-07:00Bad Check Writers Get Monkey-Wrenched
Bad check writers are opportunists that stay on the fringes of crime. They know how to manipulate the system to their advantage. They know and take advantage of the overworked and paper-heavy judicial agencies responsible for check collections. They lie, push, delay and make numerous excuses in an attempt to avoid or delay paying off their bad checks.

County agencies assigned to collect bad checks are doing the best they can. However, because of the sharp increase in numbers of citizens choosing this form of crime, the agencies are becoming over worked. In many counties the number of checks being turned in for collections is increasing while the percentage of collections is dropping. Many check writers are using the system as a credit free loan agency by negotiating time and monthly payments; causing further expenses to the county.

The National Retail Merchants Association is alarmed at the double digit increase in check losses. They say that worthless checks represent the largest increase in retail theft. The majority of check writers would not think of shoplifting but rationalize check writing because they "intend" to pay it back. Check losses and workloads on counties will only continue to increase unless affirmative action is taken.

One method that many courts and district attorneys have found particularly effective for the past two decades is requiring offenders to attend a bad check class. Many of these counties show dramatic drops in recidivism among bad check writers in their communities. Travis County, Texas, for example, reported that initially 40 to 50% of the bad checks filed with their office had been written by repeat offenders. After running bad check classes, the recidivism rate dropped to between 5 and 10%. The results have been an increase in collections, fewer losses to the community, less paper work, reduced court dockets, plus helpful budgeting and counseling to the offenders.

The American Community Corrections Institute (ACCI), a provider of bad check course materials, explains that the classes work by throwing "a psychological monkey-wrench into their mental gears" and that this causes offenders anxiety and fear about re-offending. They report that their course materials disrupt and confuse offenders' criminal thinking and thereby acts as a strong deterrent to keep them from repeating. Whether or not the courses actually work this way or not is not clear, but what is clear is that remarkable results are being enjoyed using them.

by: Jesse Fisher
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-241700029299155383.post-34141288688956575902008-10-19T11:45:00.000-07:002008-10-19T11:46:47.369-07:00A Basic Guide for Installing and Maintaining Car SpeakersBy Victor E.

Installation forms the most important part of the car speakers. Various cars have various specifications as per the sound set up and installation process. This small crash course on the step by step procedure will act as a basic car speakers guide for you. The first thing you should do before starting installation is to become acquainted with a few essential tools like screwdrivers.

You should know that each vehicle has its own specifications related to the installation issues, which vary with factory speaker location, the depth and height for mounting. Another factor to be taken into consideration is the car factory wiring. However, the most important thing required is your time and effort.

For installing car speakers, you need a few varieties of screwdrivers along with torx drivers and drill bits. Don't miss out on the socket wrench set along with the wire cutter and stripper tool. You may even require soldering iron and solder crimping tools as well as connectors along with panel removal tools and a clip remover.

However, if a clip remover is not available you can always opt for a screwdriver covered with a shop rag. You may also require a file, electrical tape and a knife. You will be required to use the wiring harness to attach the new speaker, or solder or crimp the connections, as the installation may require.

A complete component speaker system includes separate woofers, tweeters and crossovers that provide a surround sound while in the car.

A few things that you should remember, and that will help you in the long run are -

Each and every vehicle is different, so you may have to deal with them differently. The first basic step lies in identifying your vehicle. Once you have grown comfortable with your car, identify the location where you want to mount your speakers. Once you have selected the location, choose the size. Choose a speaker that comfortably fits in your car.

Make use of the factory grills and brackets while fitting in your speaker. Speakers labeled E Z will fit in the factory speaker openings. Try to use the magnet to fit the available space and do not allow the tweeters to interfere with the grills.

The speakers labeled P fit with the help of mounting brackets, which come free with the purchase of the speakers. If that does not help, you can go ahead and do a few alterations like cutting a new screw hole, cutting the required area of the pressboard or the metal to make room for mounting the speakers that are larger than the factory speakers.

In a setting of component speakers, the component woofers can be installed in the location where the factory speakers were located. If you have a set of tweeters too; you may have to think of a place where you can install them. The tweeters require custom installation. Thus to do that, it involves drilling holes either in the door panels or on the dashboard. If it is an area like the dashboard, use your tools carefully to avoid scratches on the surface.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-241700029299155383.post-25304488883790779692008-10-19T11:43:00.000-07:002008-10-19T11:44:49.017-07:00The Essential ToolsBy Ben A.

Most, if not all, homeowners have a toolbox, and DIY (do-it-yourself) junkies can't live without one. However, because tools can be so cheap and varied nowadays, there's a very strong temptation to just grab one of everything at the hardware store and then say that you're getting ready for any eventuality. This results in a cluttered garage or tool area and, in many cases, wasted money. Below are some of the bare necessities that your tool box should contain. While they may not prepare you for post-tornado house rebuilding, they will certainly suffice for fixing that noisy door in the kitchen or for the regular maintenance jobs around the house.

The Usual Stuff

These are the things that everyone has in their sets, the contents of the usual toolbox. That's another way of saying "if you don't have the following, get one now." These are tools that even your grandfather had, so you'd probably be familiar with them already.

Screwdrivers are absolutely necessary tools. They come in two general variations (the minus and the plus, formally known as the flat or straight and the Philips, respectively), but can come in a wide range of sizes. Just get the usual, fixed-blade, no-frills models unless you're expecting to do some specialized work. The teeny tiny versions of screwdrivers are called precision sets and are handy to have around.

Hammers, like screwdrivers, come in a variety of sizes for different jobs. Two should probably be enough for your needs. You could get a medium size (usually 16 oz.) for regular jobs and a larger size (usually 32 oz.) for the heavy duty work.

For plumbing and working with fasteners, you're going to need pliers and wrenches. Usually, a couple of each (one of each type, snub-nose and long-nose, for the pliers) will do. You can even go the extra mile and get a wrench set, which has about 10 to 15 pieces.

Saws are obviously necessary tools if you plan to maintain any wood or metal. For cutting metal, a hacksaw and a couple of cold chisels will do. For wood, a chisel and a saw will suffice. To save on space, you could get one of those handles that have a base compatible with removable saw blades. The blades and the handles themselves are small, and it's a great little multitool.

Your testing and measuring instruments are critical for determining when you've done a good enough job. Make sure to always pack some measuring tape, measuring tape, a measuring square, a level, a voltage tester and an amp meter. Consumable items are also important, so you should always have a couple of pencils, electrical tape, sealant, lubricant, and an array of screws, nuts, nails, and bolts on stock.

Not-So-Usual Necessities

Now that we've gone through the usual contents of the toolbox, let's cover some of the other tool necessities. These are the items your granddad probably didn't think of putting in the toolbox, but are still ones you should have yourself. Of special mention here are multitools, which have recently become very popular and, more importantly, more affordable. They're those multi-armed trinkets that have several attachments on them, hence, the name and their ability to do several tasks.

Vise-grips and a utility knife automatically fall into this category. They're great for any number of tasks and should be a staple in your toolbox. Have at least two vise-grips (plumbing jobs and clamping is usually easier with two), while a six-inch knife should be good enough. A right angle drive helps you get your fasteners into tight places and impossible spaces and, while not absolutely necessary, will be convenient to have around for several tasks.

Cleaning materials have recently become toolbox mainstays, and you should always have some, too. A bit of anti-rust agent (WD-40 works great) and a toothbrush are absolute necessities for cleaning and maintenance.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-241700029299155383.post-52535008045539080402008-10-19T11:41:00.000-07:002008-10-19T11:43:24.215-07:00Is it Worth it to Change your Own Oil?By Mike R

It’s that time of year again. You’re in your car and you happen to glance up at that little Jiffy Lube sticky on the top in the upper corner of your windshield. “I was supposed to change my oil when?!” You immediately panic when you realize your oil change is five months and two thousand miles ago overdue (which ever came first).

As long as you actually have enough oil in your engine you aren’t in horrible shape. If you had a leak or were low on oil, then you would have a problem. Your engine is comprised of metal parts that are constantly moving. The oil servers as a lubricant and is the blood of the engine. It is vital. Never drive without oil.
I just want to stress that oil is everything to your engine. Not regularly changing your vehicle’s oil will drastically shorten the life of your engine.

You should really consider having it done by a service. For not much more than you will pay for a new oil filter and 5 or 6 quarts of oil you can have the oil changed professionally. You also need to take the old oil to a mechanic or auto shop for disposal anyway. It can also be a messy procedure. Professionals can do oil changes with their eyes closed. It will take 20 minutes and cost a few bucks more. But, if you insist on doing it yourself, read on.
Before you start, gather the necessary tools and supplies. You will need the following: a new oil filter, 5 or 6 quarts of the recommended oil (check your car’s manual), an oil filter wrench, a socket set, rags and an oil pan or old bucket to catch the old oil.

You will also want to warm the engine up taking your car on a short drive around the block. Warning—you only want to warm up the engine to loosen up the oil. Warm oil drains better, but hot oil is flat out dangerous!
Now position the drain pan directly underneath the oil pan’s drain plug. Using the socket wrench, loosen and remove the oil pan plug, allowing the oil to drain freely. Be careful of hot oil and try not to drop the plug into the pan. This is what you might want to wear old clothes. Watch for splattered oil—it stains.

After all the oil has drained, remove the oil filter from the vehicle using an oil filter wrench. Set the old filter to the side and clean off the filter’s mounting surface with a clean rag. You can now take the new filter and apply a thin coating of oil to the gasket. Attach it to the vehicle and tighten according to the directions on the package (usually hand tight).

Finally reinstall the oil pan plug, pop the hood and fill the engine with the amount of oil specified by your manufacturer. Be careful not to over pour. The new oil will likely take a little time to travel down into the engine. So if the oil level on your dipstick looks low, give it a second and add a very little bit. Too much oil will require you to repeat the whole process.

That's it, you are done. Now just clean up your mess and properly dispose of your used oil and filter. Your local mechanic should be able to guide you on where you can get rid of it.
If you want to save money, look for coupons. If you’re having doubt about your skills learned in auto shop, then you might as well take it in to a professional. Good luck!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-241700029299155383.post-13741712078931642002008-10-19T11:38:00.000-07:002008-10-19T11:41:32.976-07:00Oil Changes: How to Change Oil in your Own DrivewayBy Tim L.

Changing your vehicle’s oil regularly is the single most important thing you can do for your car. Regular oil changes will extend the life of your vehicle and enhance its performance. Because contaminants are regularly deposited into your car’s oil resulting in sludge that decreases your engine’s performance (and that will over time cause engine failure) frequent oil changes are a mandatory maintenance procedure.

Most people know that they should get an oil change approximately every three months or 3,000 miles, but less know that an oil change is something that can be done in their own driveway. Doing so can save about a hundred dollars per year, and is a great way to be active with and knowledgeable about your own transportation.

Oil Change Equipment

Before getting started with your oil change, make sure you have the following materials on hand. Many of these items are sold inexpensively and are great to have handy in any garage.

3/8-drive socket set

Combination metric wrench set, including both closed and open ended wrenches.

Oil filter wrench

Oil receptacle such as a pail or old kitchen pot

Two plastic milk containers with screw on caps.

Oil funnel

Plastic Ziploc bag – 1 quart.

Several newspapers / old rags

Two pair latex gloves (optional)

A few bricks, concrete blocks or boulders.

New oil filter (see owner's manual for specifications)

New oil to refill the engine. (The back page of your vehicle’s manual should indicate grade and number of quarts.) Quick Change Oil recommends the use of synthetic oil for oil changes, such as Castrol GTX.

Before you begin, be sure to have a planned method for disposing of your dirty oil. It is illegal to dispose of used motor oil improperly. Most oil change locations will accept dirty oil for disposal free of charge.

Oil Change Step 01: Warming Up

Identify a flat space to work in your drive way or garage for you to perform the oil change once you’ve driven your vehicle for a short distance. Driving around just enough to heat up the engine will liquefy the oil for an easier emptying.

Oil Change Step 02: Stationing

Turn off your engine, put the car in Neutral and set the emergency brake firmly in place. Place several bricks in front of each of the four tires to prevent them from moving.

Oil Change Step 03: Locating the drain plug

If there is not enough room to slide under your vehicle comfortably, you’ll need to jack it up using a hydraulic pump and settle it on jack stands. (Never mount your car on a jack only – you must use jack stands.) While beneath your vehicle, identify the drain plug by searching for the lowest piece to the ground. This piece will most commonly be the nut of the oil drain plug. To avoid confusion with the transmission fluid drain plug, feel the metal around it – the oil plug will usually be much hotter than the transmission plug. In some cases the drain plug is actually labeled. Call a friend or a local oil change company for direction if you’re still unsure.

Oil Change Step 04: Draining the oil

Set out several newspapers underneath your car, focusing more on the area directly beneath the oil drain. Once you’ve located the drain plug, choose the correct socket from your set by experimenting with each until you’ve found one that nicely fits over the nut. Then, using a lot of force, turn the socket counter clockwise to crack the nut. If a socket doesn’t work, try a closed end wrench. Once the nut is cracked, loosen it carefully, using caution. Loosening the nut too much or too quickly will cause the oil to spill out. Place your oil receptacle underneath the plug making sure it is straight making sure the plug points sideways rather than straight down. A sideways pointing plug will cause the oil to empty all over instead of into your receptacle. Once correctly positioned, loosen the plug entirely. Most of the oil should drain in about two minutes.

Oil Change Step 05: Loosening the oil filter

Look up into the engine and locate the oil filter, which should look like an inverted cone. Retrieve your oil filter wrench, remove the socket from the socket wrench and set it next to the drain plug. Slip the oil filter wrench onto your socket wrench (it’s best to use a socket wrench with a short extension) and set it up to grab the filter in a counterclockwise motion. Tug on the filter slightly to loosen it. Again, caution is important because loosening the filter too quickly will spill out hot oil. Loosen a bit more using the wrench, and use your hands to remove it entirely. Make sure your face is clear of the area and pour the contents of the filter into the receptacle.

Oil Change Step 06: Removing the oil cap

Slide out from under your vehicle and open the hood. Locate the oil cap and remove it so that the oil can drain more quickly. If you have the time, wait an hour or so for all of the old oil to drain completely. This isn’t necessary, but is a good practice if you’re willing to wait.

Oil Change Step 07: Threading the new oil filter

Underneath your vehicle again, dip one gloved finger into the oil receptacle and coat the rubber edges of the new oil filter. This will help it adhere to the engine. With a clean rag, wipe off the round metal circle on the engine where the oil filter fits and put the new filter in place. By hand, tightening it should take about 1/2 or 3/4 of a turn. If it doesn’t tighten simply fit the wrench back onto the filter and tighten it the same manner it was loosened, but this time tightening in a clockwise motion.

Oil Change Step 08: Re-attaching the drain plug

At Quick Change Oil, we recommend using a new sealing washer on the drain plug when performing your own oil change. If you must use the old one, be sure to clean it prior to use. Put the washer in place and thread the drain plug back into its hole. Tighten it up with the socket set, but not so tight that removal will be difficult for the next oil change.

Oil Change Step 09: Replacing the oil

Before pouring the new oil into the spout underneath the hood, pour the content of the old oil into your milk bottle using the funnel. Wipe the funnel clean and seal the milk carton with its lid. Place the old oil filter into your Ziploc bag and set both aside for later disposal at your nearest recycling center such as your nearest Quick Change Oil location. Now place your clean funnel over the oil spout underneath your hood and deposit as many quarts of oil as directed by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Once the oil is emptied, replace the oil cap and close the hood.

Oil Change Step 10: Checking for leaks

Start your engine and let idle for 5 minutes. Make sure to look underneath your vehicle for oil leaks. If your vehicle is leaking, it’s probably best to have it corrected by an oil change station.

Remember that safety is paramount. If you have a friend who will accompany you, it’s best to perform your first oil change in the company of another person. Changing your own oil is a rewarding experience, but if you prefer to have it taken for you, make sure it’s done right. Choose an oil change company that uses high quality Castrol synthetic motor oil, the best oil, engineered for extreme heat extreme cold, frequent stop and go driving, towing heavy loads, and high speed.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-241700029299155383.post-55693638616580821342008-10-19T11:36:00.000-07:002008-10-19T11:37:38.733-07:00Essential Tools For Any Kitchen Remodeling ProjectBy Jhon R.

Before you start any major project, it's important to have all the proper tools and materials that you will need. Along with having the right tools, you also need to understand their purpose and the basics of how to use them safely. In this article, we'll cover some standard tools you will need for most kitchen remodeling projects along with a few critical safety tips.

Tile-Cutter/Tile Saw

A tile cutter or tile saw is basically a tool that allows you to safely cut tiling. Whether you are putting in a new backsplash or redoing the floors, this is an invaluable tool that will be essential to your project.

A tile saw uses a water-cooled diamond blade to make extremely precise cuts through thick tiles. Be careful when using this power tool and always wear safety glasses to protect your eyes against flying pieces of tile.

Jigsaw

A jigsaw is an extremely versatile hand-saw that's great for jobs like cutting out sink holes on laminate counter tops. Most home renovators opt for the flexibility and mobility that a cordless version offers, but you can save money and get more power with corded options. Look for a jigsaw with a variable speed option that will allow you to adjust the speed of the blade depending on your project.

Safety Gear

No job site is complete without safety gear. You should always have full eye protection, ear covers for noisy environments, ventilation masks, a hard hat to protect your head, work boots, gloves for both sharp and hazardous materials and a first aid kit. Many people take safety for granted when doing home renovations, feeling a false sense of security since the work is at home and not a large construction site. That, though, is where the danger lies. So it is not enough to simply have safety gear on hand - it is also critical to use them!

Router

A router is one of the most versatile tools you'll ever use and it comes in handy when you're working with cabinetry or countertops. A router is simply a cutting device attached to a vertical motor. It lets you work with complex joinery like dowel joints or dovetails; it can shave off that extra ¾ of an inch of countertop and it is strong enough to cut plastic, laminate, MDF and lots more.

Wrench Set

A good wrench set is going to get you through most of your plumbing needs. Look for one that feels comfortable in your hands but still gives you a feeling of weight and power.

Finally, you're going to need a lot more tools to complete a kitchen remodeling project - band saws, drills and sanders could all be needed along with hand items like putty knives, trowels and a tape measure. But, these are the basics. To save money, you can rent most power tools from your local hardware store. With programs that allow you to rent tools by the hour or the month, this can be a great option for home renovators looking to save some money.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-241700029299155383.post-67957114506163655942008-10-19T11:33:00.000-07:002008-10-19T11:35:08.154-07:00Setting Up A Climbing WallBy Kris K.

Many Health Experts believe that a rock-climbing wall is an answer to the regular gym problems a layman faces. The sport by itself offers a whole-body workout and strengthens an athlete's back and hands. It is the only overall exercise kit that is portable enough to remain in a single room or in the backyard of your house. Thus, the best possible option is to manually construct a rock-climbing wall at home.

The process may require your carpentry skills and good amount of resources, but most of them easily found at home. The resources include a free continuous wall, holds and reasonable floor space. The holds can be easily arranged as the wall is being built, thus creating your own unique climbing route.

The wall must have developed angular faces and forty-five to sixty degree elevation between the verticals and overhangs. This is where guidance from an engineer or a veteran rock climber is essential. An engineer could offer more precision in construction by designing a variety of blueprints regarding the angles, the placement of the holds, sizes and location.

A home rock climbing wall, also known as 'Woodie' is specifically created on wooden frames. But if you do have a termite problem, an iron casting is recommended. Wood is more appropriate because it is organically disposable, safe and agrees with the human skin (you wouldn't want scratches and wounds to mess with your climbing experience).

A general design of a Woodie would require separate construction of its individual wall faces, which is later combined to form a compact framework. The framework is then attached or rested on a free wall in the house, leaving no gaps in between to ensure safety. If the surface is free-standing, the framework should be three dimensional to be structurally sound. The faces can be enveloped with plywood or hard plastic sheets. By spending a little more, you can include smaller panels with thick resin and a stone coating offering the same feel as natural rock.

As the wall nears its completion, you will be left with a tougher task of arranging the holds. In such cases, using an expert guidebook would do well. A guidebook would offer instructions on the placement of each hold and selection of bolts. Every hold has its own unique style built to protect the climber from a freefall. When tightening bolts, it is advisable to use a T-handle hex wrench. The specialty of this wrench is that its makes it easier to fix the bolt head inside the hold. If you are looking at building a good route, restrict the total number of holds and space them well.

A rock climbing wall becomes more challenging as its height increases, which is why selecting an isolated area with a towering ceiling should serve your purpose. Just in case, you would like to construct in your backyard, it is better to use a children's tree house or a dead tree stump. The most important detail that shouldn't be ignored when constructing a climbing wall is that the wall should be sufficiently agile to handle dynamic movements and shift of load on its surface.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-241700029299155383.post-51200382169747558902008-10-19T11:30:00.000-07:002008-10-19T11:33:25.880-07:00The Fifteen In One Multi-purpose WrenchBy Brian

The Fifteen in One Multi-Purpose Wrench is a multi purpose tool that poker room' must have. It is actually a socket wrench that comes with special internal mechanisms and is of great use where you need to be absolutely sure about the tightness of the screws and the bolts. You can measure how much torque is applied so that you are sure that the tightness is up to the specifications. So, you can ensure that there is proper loading and tension of all the parts. So indirectly, it is measuring bolt tension. However, thanks to the friction between the mating hole and the fastener, this technique does suffer from inaccuracy sometimes. So it is better to measure the bolt tension or the bolt stretch and very often torque is the only measurement that is possible and accurate.

You do get more sophisticated versions where a calibrated clutch mechanism is used. As soon as you get the desired torque, a clutch slips and you prevent over tightening. The most common one uses a ball detent and spring and the spring comes preloaded with an adjustable screw thread and this is calibrated in torque units. This ball detent uses force till you get the desired torque and then the spring is released and the balls clicks out of the socket. There are quite a few variations to this design and you have a whole range of them for various applications and sizes. This design is, in fact, modified and used in drills to prevent the gouging-out of the heads of screws while tightening them.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-241700029299155383.post-70368158198468032022008-10-19T11:10:00.000-07:002008-10-19T11:13:58.184-07:00Different Kinds Of Tool SetsBy Christa K

Tool sets are helpful for a handyman in performing tasks.
